Where is Pawleys Island SC
Approximately 35 miles south of the center of Myrtle Beach, is located historic Pawleys Island. This community has a rich history of shipwrecks, plantations, and beautiful beaches. The earliest inhabitants of the area known are the Winyah and Waccamaw Native Americians. During colonial development, the island became a summer refuge from the mosquitoes because of its frequent windy conditions. Originally owned by George Pawley, the town's namesake, many portions of the island were sold to other plantation owners looking to escape malaria. During the Presidency of George Washington in 1791, Washington toured the country traveling King’s Highway. As a part of that tour, he visited the unincorporated portion of Pawleys Island with families such as the Alstons and others who owned plantations in the area.
The town of Pawleys Island was incorporated in 1985. It has approximately 100 residents and is about 1 square mile in size but offers over 3 miles of beachfront property. The weather usually allows for swimming from May to October. For most months of the year, you can fish, crab, shrimp, or gather bushels of oysters!
