Located at the south end of the Grand Strand, Murrells Inlet is an unincorporated area of Georgetown County. Just beyond the reaches of Horry County, it's about 13 miles south of Myrtle Beach, SC and 21 miles north of Georgetown. The Waccamaw River to the west and the namesake inlet to the east border a quiet community of coastal forests dotted with golf courses and negihborhoods and saltwater estuaries. The two main roadways, US-17 and US-17 Business, run parallel across Murrells Inlet. The neighboring towns are Garden City to the north and Litchfield to the south.

In the early 18th century, the English and Spanish began to settle and develop plantations in the area. Large plantations dotted the Carolina coast grew mostly rice and indigo until the end of the Civil War. After almost a century and a half of hurricanes, development, and other natural disasters, most of these plantations are gone.

At the center of the over 2500 acre coastal preservation is the Atalaya Castle. Atalaya Castle, built as a winter home for Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, was built in a unique Spanish style not found often on the Carolina coast. This castle was built during the Great Depression to withstand the most violent of hurricanes seen in the last century.
Archer Huntington was a well-known philanthropist whose wealth was inherited from his adopted father Collis P Huntington. Anna Hyatt Huntington was a known 20th century sculptor whose art and legacy can be seen in both Huntington State Park and Brookgreen Gardens. Along with the castle are a variety of nature trails and docks that can be used to view the local wildlife or even catch a few blue crabs to take home for a crab boil!
