Murrells Inlet is a seaside community south of Myrtle Beach, neighboring Garden City and Surfside Beach. The land comprising the Murrells Inlet community has its origins being settled thousands of years ago by the idiginous peoples such as the Waccamaw tribe. Even to this day on the banks of rivers and inlets, you can find relics of this tribe’s ancient existence.

During the colonial period, at the height of Piracy in the Atlantic, Murrells Inlet was rumored to be a favorite hideout for pirates waiting to plunder the ships carrying goods across the Atlantic. These pirates even included the infamous Edward Teach; otherwise known as Blackbeard. During this time, in the early 18th century, the English and Spanish began to settle and develop plantations in the area. Large plantations dotted the Carolina coast grew mostly rice and indigo until the end of the Civil War. After almost a century and a half of hurricanes, development, and other natural disasters, most of these plantations are gone.
