Where is Murrells Inlet, SC?

Located at the south end of the Grand Strand, Murrells Inlet is an unincorporated area of Georgetown County. Just beyond the reaches of Horry County, it's about 13 miles south of Myrtle Beach, SC and 21 miles north of Georgetown. The Waccamaw River to the west and the namesake inlet to the east border a quiet community of coastal forests dotted with golf courses and negihborhoods and saltwater estuaries. The two main roadways, US-17 and US-17 Business, run parallel across Murrells Inlet. The neighboring towns are Garden City to the north and Litchfield to the south.

South of Garden City, Surfside, and Myrtle Beach is the community of Murrells Inlet. History of Murrells Inlet, SC

The land comprising the Murrells Inlet community was originally home to indigenous populations, such as the Waccamaw tribe. During the colonial period, Murrells Inlet was rumored to be a favorite hideout for pirates including the infamous Edward Teach; otherwise known as Blackbeard.

In the early 18th century, the English and Spanish began to settle and develop plantations in the area. Large plantations dotted the Carolina coast grew mostly rice and indigo until the end of the Civil War. After almost a century and a half of hurricanes, development, and other natural disasters, most of these plantations are gone.

Where to eat in Murrells Inlet, SC?

If you love oysters cooked or raw, be sure to visit Nance’s Creekfront restaurant. It has been serving “Calabash style” food for ages and does oysters the best in the inlet. Located on the more southern side of the inlet away from the center of the marshwalk, it has a great atmosphere that helps to soothe the most stringent of nerves. After you eat, the Hot Fish Club is a quick walk next door and offers one of the most fun outdoor bars of the area. At almost any night of the week, you can visit their gazebo bar and listen to some of the best live music the inlet has to offer.

If you love the outdoors, there is plenty to do in Murrells inlet.For those looking to make their own fresh caught seafood, try a half or full day fishing charter. If fishing isnt up your alley, take a visit to Huntington Beach. Located directly south of Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach is a State Park is home to a spacious, immaculate beach, and nature trails allowing the view of over 300 species of birds and wildlife. At the center of the over 2500 acre coastal preservation is the Atalaya Castle. Atalaya Castle, built as a winter home for Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, was built in a unique Spanish style not found often on the Carolina coast. This castle was built during the Great Depression to withstand the most violent of hurricanes seen in the last century. 

Archer Huntington was a well-known philanthropist whose wealth was inherited from his adopted father Collis P Huntington. Anna Hyatt Huntington was a known 20th century sculptor whose art and legacy can be seen in both Huntington State Park and Brookgreen Gardens. Along with the castle are a variety of nature trails and docks that can be used to view the local wildlife or even catch a few blue crabs to take home for a crab boil!
